Beginning Division
(Ages 3-6)

The Beginning Division is for our youngest dancers ages 3 to 6 and includes Beginning levels A, B, and C. Classes are offered by age and are carefully developed in accordance with a child’s physical and cognitive abilities. Classes are designed to encourage students to explore the elements of dance with a focus towards ballet in a fun and nurturing environment while setting the stage for future training. All students will perform in the Spring Performance.

Beginning A (Age 3-4)
Park City

  • Beginning Level A classes are interactive, where children learn the foundation of dance and discover the joy of movement. We believe a child’s (and parent’s) early experiences with dance should make a positive and lasting impression. Activities vary weekly and focus on developing fundamental motor skills, strength, rhythm, and coordination. In a creative setting, children learn self-expression, self-discipline, and respect for others. Ballet/Tap Combo class is also offered. Students must be potty-independent with no exceptions.

The Elementary Division is for students ages 6 and up. Classes are offered by age and are carefully developed in accordance with a child’s physical and cognitive abilities. Children are placed in a safe and nurturing environment. Parents are invited to watch class during scheduled parent watch weeks. Children at this level will participate in the Ballet West Academy Winter & Spring Productions.

Elementary A (Ages 6-7)
Park City

  • Elementary A is the bridge between a creative format and a more formal structure to ballet class. It is at this level that we begin the systematic approach to classical ballet training defined in the Ballet West Academy syllabus. Basic ballet terminology and music awareness are introduced. Students continue to explore creative expression, refine motor skills, and gain strength and coordination, and will be introduced to nutritional “food for fuel” concepts. Children are encouraged to practice self-discipline, resulting in respect and safety for themselves and others.

Park City

  • Elementary B defines the formal structured approach to classical ballet training. The student identifies and demonstrates knowledge of the body as an instrument by refining movement skills and coordination. Students gain a basic understanding of French ballet vocabulary, a simple anatomical awareness as it applies to ballet, and nutritional (“food for fuel”) concepts. Structured body conditioning and flexibility exercises are introduced as well as an expanded knowledge of syllabus exercises. Students continue to explore musical awareness and learn simple elements of creative dance. Summer classes are encouraged.

Elementary C (Ages 8 and Up)
Park City

  • Elementary C is the introduction to the fundamentals of classical ballet technique building to advanced beginner skills. The focus during these formative years of training is on traditional classical ballet techniques as defined in the Ballet West Academy syllabus. Students improve their understanding of proper ballet terminology and increase their awareness of anatomy, posture, and correct alignment. We begin to emphasize musicality, and further develop strength, coordination, and flexibility. Dancers should expect to spend about 2 years in the Elementary C levels. Students may be required to repeat this level and summer classes are strongly encouraged to stay on track for fall placement.

Current dancers placed in Elementary C by Allison DeBona are welcome to register.

If you are a new student and interested in Elementary C, please email Allison DeBona at adebona@balletwest.org to schedule a placement class.

Student Division
(Ages 11 to 18)

The student division at Park City, Utah is designed for students ages 11 to 18. Acceptance and placement are determined by placement only. Promotions are considered on an individual basis and determined in part by an examination demonstrated at the end of the school year and an evaluation by the Ballet West Academy Director and Principal of the Campus. Students in this division can expect to spend more than one year in each level.

Level 1/2

  • Upon completing the essential requirements of training and successfully demonstrating appropriate skill level and maturity, students are ready for a more intense and challenging course of study. Female students at this level must show a structural capacity for pointe work and all students must possess ample strength and stamina.  All of the classes in our comprehensive curriculum are designed to best provide the skills necessary to pursue a career in dance. We believe in a healthy and nurturing approach to the development of each student. As the level of difficulty increases, so does the passion for the pursuit for excellence. As a result, every student’s advancement through the program is based on their ability rather than their age.

Jazz

  • The jazz program includes instruction in classical jazz. Classical jazz has its own unique and specific movement language and vocabulary. The music and movement can range from energetic and vibrant to soft and soulful. The focus is not only on the technique, but also on the artistry of the movement. Dancers are encouraged to express feelings, ideas and emotions through movement.

Tap

  • Tap is an integral part of an expanded dance curriculum. Tap is beneficial in many ways, including increasing cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility and coordination. Tap builds strength in the legs and feet as well as increasing flexibility in the hips, knees and ankles. Tap also enhances cognitive abilities. To become proficient, dancers must develop muscle memory and mental acuity. Tap develops a great sense of rhythm and timing. Best of all… tap is just plain fun!
