Student Division Levels 1 through 8 are designed for students ages 9 and above. Ballet West Academy promotes a healthy and nurturing approach. Classes follow a carefully constructed, comprehensive curriculum, designed to provide the skills necessary to pursue a career in dance. Students perform in the Ballet West Academy Winter, Spring, and Contemporary Showcases.


Ballet West Academy’s Student Division provides year-round training in Downtown Salt Lake City, at our Ballet Centre and Trolley Corners campuses. Promotions within the Student Division are considered on an individual basis and determined in part by an examination demonstrated at the end of the school year and an evaluation by the faculty and Campus Principal. Students in this division can expect to spend more than one year in each level.

Level 1
Trolley Corners

  • Upon placement in Level 1, students begin to experience the satisfaction of a more comprehensive knowledge of the Ballet West Academy syllabus and the ability to execute its principles. The emphasis in this level is the development of the “whole child.” Along with continued progress in their physical development, students enjoy a more detailed curriculum.

Level 3
Trolley Corners

  • Level 3 prepares the serious dance student for entrance to the Upper School. Students in this level begin to understand a commitment to excellence and the desire to achieve their “personal best”. It is at this stage in a child’s training that we begin to see them emerge as young artists. We continue to build on each student’s natural abilities while emphasizing strength, stamina, and technical accomplishment. In addition to technique and conditioning classes, the students add modern dance to their program. Boys focus on boys’ techniques while girls at this level are carefully evaluated and typically placed on pointe. With support and guidance students progress at a pace tailored to match their individual needs.

Level 4
Trolley Corners

  • Upon completing the essential requirements of training and successfully demonstrating appropriate skill level and maturity, students are ready for a more intense and challenging course of study in Level 4. Female students at this level must show a structural capacity for pointe work, and all students must possess ample strength and stamina.  All of the classes in our comprehensive curriculum are designed to best provide the skills necessary to pursue a career in dance. We believe in a healthy and nurturing approach to the development of each student. As the level of difficulty increases, so does the passion for the pursuit of excellence. As a result, every student’s advancement through the program is based on ability rather than age.

Level 5
Ballet Centre

  • Level 5 is the entry into the upper school of Ballet West Academy. Female students at this level must have strong pointe work at barre and center. Male students will continue to have specialized classes in male technique. Supplemental classes in modern, conditioning, and pas de deux help to round out the curriculum for these students to better prepare them for the versatile demands of the professional ballet career.

Student Division students (Levels 6-8) have the opportunity to audition for the Current Contemporary Performing Ensemble, the official contemporary group of the Ballet West Academy. Students can dive more deeply into contemporary techniques, creative processes, and performance opportunities with guest choreographers.
